My headphones cranking “This Land Is Your Land,” I’m walking through dystopian city streets, my head bobbing, keeping time with old Woody’s beat — when NPR interrupts: the Fed raises the rate!
I don’t know what got into me. I thought that, in my position, out front in the POTUS race, I’d check in with The People, see what The People think. I stepped through a window that had all the glass broken out, bought a Pabst Blue Ribbon, and outside, negotiating piles of garbage and grocery carts, I sat down beside an old woman asleep on the sidewalk, gently shook what I took to be her shoulder and was startled when she awoke and (thank God she had a soft voice) accused me of trying to steal the “In Our America Everyone Is Equal” pin she had attached to the breast of her shirt.
