David Allan Th eis, age 66, died peacefully at home on April 11 surrounded by family and a few close friends after an exhausting battle with cancer. Born in Laporte, Ind., he grew up in Boulder. Dave lived numerous colorful lives in a variety of cities in Wyoming, Colorado and Virginia before settling in Crested Butte and marrying Judy Desrosier in 1977. Equipped with a tenacious appetite for knowledge, Dave held a vast assortment of interesting jobs including work in a candle factory, an ethanol plant, a pyrotechnics plant, oil fields, and mining; as well as being an extra in a cowboy movie, ranch work including herding cattle and breaking horses, an arborist at a landscaping company, a logger, a heavy machine operator, a carpenter, an excavator and his most recent job as an electrician at CB Electric. He had many hobbies and interests including: everything about motorcycles first and foremost, airplanes, vintage trucks, heavy equipment, machinery, bowl and metal turning, the outdoors, astronomy, traveling, collecting things and eating. Dave was a friend to many and loved talking to people. He thoroughly loved life and would most readily share his everacquiring knowledge and zest with anyone who asked. He was fascinated in how things worked and was particularly skilled at troubleshooting. Possessed of a quick, sarcastic and often dry sense of humor, Dave was beloved by many in his ability to make them laugh. Paired with his exceptional dancing, Dave’s graceful singing will forever be remembered. He is survived by his wife of over 20 years, Judi of Crested Butte; his children Danny Albin of Crested Butte, Nikki Albin Dust of Longmont (recently deceased), Ashley Albin (Clayeton Arnold) of Gunnison, John Theis of Crested Butte, Maya Theis of Crested Butte; grandson Andre’ Dust of Longmont ; granddaughter Ember Arnold of Gunnison; brothers Pete (Doris) of Grand Junction and Bruce (Jessie Tremper) of Santa Fe, N.M.; sisters Susan Morse of Boulder, Linda Theis of Chicago, Ill., Nancy Raines of Longmont, Diana LaMorris of Pueblo; nieces and nephews, as well as numerous in-laws from Judi’s side of the family. He was predeceased by his parents Vincent Theis and Dorothy Theis, as well as brother Bob. A Celebration of Life service for Dave Theis will be held on June 16 at 10:30 a.m. at his family home at 210 Huckeby Way in Crested Butte South. All who knew him are welcome to attend this potluck event and to share memories.
