Following a report earlier this year by Gunnisonbased Sustainable Strategies Development Group (SDSG) citing a myriad of barriers to local renewable energy generation in the City of Gunnison, municipal leaders appear willing to listen to the wants of residents.

That report primarily targeted the policies of the city and its electricity provider, Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN). In response, city leaders approved on first reading Tuesday changes to the “net metering” policy outlining how and when residents and business owners are compensated for electricity they produce.

The move was met with appreciation by some of the most ardent critics of the city’s former policy. However, we hope that city leaders agree bigger strides are needed in coming years amid a quickly changing energy landscape.
