There has been some confusion in the valley about an expenditure made recently by the Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association (TA). I reached out to John Norton, executive director of the TA, and was also provided information from their public relations staff person. I was unclear about how the tax dollars were being used for this expense, and many locals shared my confusion.
The first myth that needs clearing up is that the TA spent $600,000 to “relocate” a company to Gunnison County. In actuality, the TA purchased $300,000 per year in advertising for two years, totaling $600,000. The fact that the company they purchased it from relocated to Gunnison County was an added bonus.
