Billy Joe Long was lifted by angels to be with his heavenly Father and Lord Jesus on May 30. He died at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 85 suffering from dementia and other health issues. Billy Joe was born to Omar James Long and Carrie A. Jones on Dec. 13, 1934 in Gladewater, Texas. His father remarried later to Bernice L. Langston, who raised older brother Fred, Joe and younger brother Bob in Bristow and Pryor, Okla. The boys attended and graduated from Pryor High School, Okla. Joe and Fred attended OSU at Stillwater, Okla., and majored in building construction for two years. They then enlisted in the Navy Sea Bee’s — Joe going to Alaska and Fred to North Africa.
After serving, in 1958 they returned to Gunnison and helped Omar build Long’s Motel on the river. Fred married and moved here and Joe helped him build Park-It Mobile Homes and Laundry, many houses in West Gunnison and Long’s Riverside Apartments.
Joe met Troas Elizabeth Schlotterer at church and married at Trinity April 29, 1961. They just celebrated 59 years. Joe worked several construction jobs and bought Park-It Mobile
Homes from Fred when he and his family moved back to Oklahoma.
Joe and Troas had three children: Marvin, Brenda and Diana. Marvin James Long preceded Joe in death from a heart attack in 2005. His children are Matthew Omar Long and Jennifer Louise Long. Jennifer married Sergio Vega and their daughter is Kimberly Louise Vega. They live in Lakewood, Colo. Brenda Lee Long married Darren Bishop, living in Gunnison. Their daughter Brittney Michelle and her son Beau live in California. Diana Lynn Engel has a daughter Karen and they also live in California.
Joe’s living brothers are Freddie Dean Long married to Janet Charlene Rodden and Bobby Ray Long married to Mary Maxene Long.
Services will be scheduled for a later date. Donations in Joe’s name may be made to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital or favorite ministry or charity.
