More History Colorado grant funding for preservation

The Gunnison Arts Center’s (GAC) restoration project is well underway with newly awarded funding from History Colorado’s State Historic Preservation Fund fall grant cycle. A total of $196,369 was granted to the GAC for the exterior preservation of the building — the stone and wood components.

The stone walls, which were quarried locally, need mortar repointing. Repairs and repainting to trim and the one exterior stucco wall are also on the docket.

The preservation project is the second phase of a 5-phase preservation plan to keep the historic building — listed on the State Register of Historic Properties — standing strong for years to come. The first phase was completed in the summer of 2018. The roof was stripped down to its historic material and the rubber membrane protection was replaced.
