Amid the COVID-19 scare, locals are stepping up

Jake Sawatsky can’t remember the amount of days he’s sat in an office chair answering phone calls at the Gunnison County Courthouse. The days are too eclectic to tell them apart.

Some moments are quiet; he scrolls through social media on his cell phone or talks to the other volunteers who sit around him, also waiting for the ring of the office phones. Others are rapid fire moments; digesting info regarding the newest county ordinances as soon as they’re released and being prepared to inform anyone who calls into the call center — and plenty of people will.

But Sawatsky feels it’s a necessity to give to his community in times of crisis, like the unsure times Gunnison County is currently facing amid the coronavirus — or COVID-19 — pandemic that has seeped its way into the valley.
