The ‘general purposes’ of mitigation money

A large distribution of marijuana tax revenue by the City of Gunnison to the Gunnison Arts Center (GAC) has raised eyebrows of some community members. Last week, city leaders awarded $100,000 to the GAC for its capital campaign to restore and maintain its historic home.

The campaign, named “Framing Our Future,” has already raised well more than half its initial goal of $1 million. Organizers hope to double that amount by the time the campaign is completed.

The money from the city will be used to leverage additional grant dollars and private donations which will go toward removing asbestos, renovating the busy Black Box Theater, creating a media arts lab, installing a teaching kitchen and more.
