When opinion goes too far

As a young editor at my college newspaper, I was full of gusto, intent on rooting out the ills of society and a little too captivated by the powers, or so perceived, of the Fourth Estate. I was just beginning to dabble in editorial writing and stumbled upon an easy target — a group of co-eds who repeatedly came before student government to ask for money at a time when the rest of the campus was making due with less. In retrospect, it was no fault of theirs. They were part of a class that required frequent planning of campus events but offered no financial means to make it happen.
