Historically, more skiers have flown here when we have more seats for sale. But this past winter that didn’t happen. We had more air seats and fewer people landed in Gunnison. About 2 percent fewer than last year even with our epic snowfalls.
Historically, when fewer people arrive by air, lodging in the valley takes a hit. But in winter 2016-17 that didn’t happen. Commercial lodging occupancies grew 12 percent in December; 51 percent in snowy January; 16 percent in February; and 12 percent in March. (Shortterm rentals are not in these baseline numbers.)
