Feeding an exercise in futility?
By Will Shoemaker
To feed or not to feed, that is the question.
Folks are worried, and with reason. A big winter tends to roar into the Gunnison Basin about once a decade, and by most measurements we’re in the thick of one. In the past when these onslaughts occurred, the troops rallied, lending a hand to wildlife managers in an effort to preserve as many mule deer as possible.
Sportsmen — a group to which I subscribe; luckily there’s still “sport” in coming up empty handed on occasion — and friends of all things furry would have us believe that Colorado Parks and Wildlife has dropped the ball this winter, opting to “bait” instead of “feed,” and doing a poor job of the that since these managers can’t be seen much from the highway. (Nevermind that drawing animals away from the asphalt deathtrap is the whole point of the operation.)
