The Gunnison Men’s Competitive softball league held the first of two nights of its end-of-season tournament on Monday night. Teams played four games in total, resulting in two wins for Blackstock Bistro.

Singer Automotive crowned Coed Competitive champion
Plays a tripleheader to take the winSinger Automotive had a long night on Tuesday, slogging through a tripleheader to win the Coed Competitive Championship with a final tight 26-25 win over Western.
The afternoon began with Singer, the second seed, taking on the Bethany Bolts, third seed, in the quarterfinals. Singer emerged victorious, moving them to the semifinals where it beat Western, 27-12.
Billingsley joins Mountaineer volleyball staff
Mountaineer athletics is excited to announce the hiring of Maggie Billingsley as the new assistant women’s volleyball coach.
“Maggie came highly recommended from almost every coach I talked to in the Bay Area and Central Valley,” said Head Coach Eric Ballelos. “She has so much enthusiasm and love for her student-athletes and for this profession. There’s no doubt she’ll make an immediate, positive impact on our program and our team culture. We’re very lucky to have her at Western.”

Gunnison Grey takes Cal Ripken championship
Wins by a single point over Gunnison RedThe Cal Ripken baseball season has finally come to a close. On Wednesday, Gunnison Grey squeaked out a 7-6 win over Gunnison Red to clinch the season ending tournament championship. Though unsurprising, considering Grey’s consistently triumphant season, Red gave them a serious run for it in the final two games.

Gunnison Red takes 4th/5th grade baseball championship
Runs gauntlet through Crested Butte and Gunnison GreyGunnison Red emerged as the winner of the 4th/5th grade baseball league end of the summer tournament at Jorgensen Park on July 20. The team’s first game, against Crested Butte, ended with a close score of 6-5, and its second with a 12-6 finish against Gunnison Grey.

Due to extreme spring weather in the valley, the local baseball season always runs longer than those of nearby towns, such as Buena Vista and Salida, so the only available participants in the tournament are the two Gunnison teams, Gray and Red, and one Crested Butte team.

Across the board, Gunnison athletes placed well, and Head Coach Sam Denham said their performance could mean good things for this weekend’s state meet.
Gunnison fastpitch beats Buena Vista
Strong pitching and batting lead the team to victoryOn Friday, July 8, the Gunnison U14 Fastpitch took on Buena Vista at Jorgensen Park, finishing with a final score of 12-6. The win bumped Gunnison’s record up to 11 wins and 5 losses for the season.
The evening program included both fastpitch and town league softball action. The girls fastpitch played first, and set the tone for an unhindered run through the team roster. With a distinct advantage in hitting power, Gunnison did not let up on its efforts until the last play was called.
