Helen Winslow passed away in Gunnison on Friday, July 18 at the age of 86. Helen was born at the family ranch up Ohio Creek on Feb. 10, 1928. Her parents were ranchers Philip Easterly and Nellie (Clamp) Easterly. Her sister and brother were Grace Easterly and James Easterly. Helen graduated from Gunnison High School in 1946. She was musically gifted and was the drum major for the high school band. She took classes at Western State College the following year. She married her long-time childhood sweetheart, Roy Bartlett Winslow on Nov. 2, 1948, soon after Roy had joined the U.S. Navy. Over the next five years, Helen and Roy lived in various places along the eastern seaboard, including Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Va., and Jacksonville, Fla. They then moved to Denver (Westminster), where Helen remained busy running the household and raising her three children, Teri, Jeff and Rick. The family returned to Gunnison in 1963, where Helen remained for the rest of her life. She continued to raise the family and also held jobs as a receptionist and clerk at the local phone company (Mountain Bell), Lallier’s Drug Store and Van’s Food Store (now the Powerstop). To know Helen was to love Helen. She had numerous close friends in the community. She had a pleasant disposition right up to the end and was truly loved by those who knew her. She was very actively involved in the Episcopal Church (Church of the Good Samaritan) for over 50 years. She was treasurer of the church for many, many years. Helen was also an active member of D.A.R., P.E.O. and the American Legion Auxiliary. She did weekly volunteer work at the Opportunity Shop (Episcopal “Goodwill” Shop) for about 20 years. During several of her later years, she volunteered as a receptionist at the Pioneer Museum. Helen is survived by her chi ldren, Ter i Doyle and Jeff (Kathy) Winslow; her grandchildren Melissa Hart, Ashley Doyle Edwards, Jake Offen and Sean McLellan; greatgrandchildren Avery, Seven, Serai and Ever; and nieces and nephews Robert, Virginia, Richard, Steve and Ken. Helen was predeceased by her husband Roy, son Rick Winslow, parents Philip and Nellie Easterly, brother James Easterly, sister Grace Easterly and nephew James. Services will be held at Church of the Good Samaritan on Sep. 20 at 11 a.m., followed by reception and internment at the Gunnison Cemetery.
